What changes when you convert HEIC to BMP
- BMP is lossless, but it cannot restore what HEIC already threw away. The file will be larger, often much larger, with exactly the same picture in it.
- HEIC can carry HDR and 10-bit colour; BMP cannot. Highlights are tone-mapped to standard range.
- BMP does not carry metadata: EXIF, GPS, camera settings and tags are dropped. That is a privacy feature as often as it is a loss.
When to convert, and when not to
Convert to BMP for legacy Windows software. Uncompressed Windows bitmap. Huge files, trivially simple.
Keep HEIC for staying inside the Apple ecosystem. What iPhones shoot. Half the size of JPG at the same quality, but Windows and the web struggle with it.
Do not convert to BMP hoping to improve quality: the detail HEIC discarded is gone. Convert only when a tool insists on BMP.
