Open a PDF file free, right in your browser

Drop a PDF below to read it. No Adobe Reader, no account, no upload: the document is opened by your browser on your device, and checked for damage while you read.

🔒 Read and checked in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and any scripts inside the PDF are never run.

To open a PDF document for free, drop it on the viewer above. It displays every page, lets you search the text, zoom and print, and runs a health check that explains why a PDF refuses to open elsewhere. The file is read locally and never uploaded.

How to open a PDF document

  1. Drop the PDF on the viewer, or click it to choose the file.
  2. Read it: scroll, zoom, rotate, search the text with the search box, jump to a page.
  3. Download or print it if you need to. The health report on the side tells you whether the file is sound.

Why read your PDF here

  • Nothing is uploaded. Contracts, payslips, medical records and tax notices stay on your device, which matters more than speed for the documents people most often need to open.
  • Nothing to install. It works in any recent browser on Windows, Mac, Linux, Android and iPhone, including on a borrowed computer.
  • Safer with attachments you did not expect. A PDF can carry JavaScript; this viewer never runs it, and tells you when a file contains some.
  • Faithful rendering. The same engine as Firefox's built-in reader, with the fonts and decoders that Chinese, Japanese and scanned documents need.

My PDF will not open: the usual causes

The viewer checks for each of these automatically and says which one applies.

  • The download was cut off. The file stops before its end marker; pages near the end are missing.
  • It is not really a PDF. Very often a login or error page saved with a .pdf name, or a Word file that was renamed.
  • It is password protected. Not damaged: it needs its password, which you can type here without it leaving your device.
  • It shows "Please wait..." forever. That is an XFA form, which only Adobe Acrobat Reader can display.
  • Its internal index is damaged. Browsers rebuild it silently, stricter apps refuse the file. The checker offers a repair.
  • It is empty or full of zeros. Typical of a OneDrive, iCloud or Dropbox file that never finished syncing.

Opening a PDF on your phone or computer without this page

  • Windows: Edge and Chrome open PDFs natively. Right-click the file, Open with, then your browser.
  • Mac: Preview opens every PDF. Double-click the file.
  • iPhone and iPad: tap the file in the Files app, or in the Mail attachment.
  • Android: Google Drive and most file managers display PDFs.

If none of those can open it, the file itself is the problem, and the check on this page tells you what is wrong with it.

Questions

Is it really free to open a PDF here?

Yes, with no account, no page limit and no watermark. Your device does the work, so there is nothing to charge for.

Is my PDF uploaded to a server?

No. It is read by your browser and stays on your device. Open your browser's network panel while you read: nothing the size of your file is sent anywhere.

Can I open a password-protected PDF?

Yes, if you know the password. You type it in the viewer; it decrypts the file inside the tab and is never sent or stored. There is no way to open it without the password.

Can I search the text of the PDF?

Yes. Type in the search box: the viewer counts the matches and jumps between the pages that contain them. Scanned PDFs contain pictures of text, not text, so they cannot be searched.

How do I print the PDF?

Use the Print button: it opens the same file in your browser's built-in reader, which prints with the right page sizes.

Is there a size limit?

No fixed one. Pages are drawn only as you reach them, so documents of several hundred pages read comfortably on a laptop.

Do I need Adobe Reader?

No, with one exception: XFA forms (the ones that show "Please wait...") only work in Adobe Acrobat Reader. The check tells you when you have one.
